Aetna Medicare Supplements

Aetna has become very popular in the Medicare Supplement world.

When I first started working with Medicare Supplements (back in 2010), Aetna was not one of the "big players" in the Medicare Supplement world.

Things have changed!

They are now the third largest provider of Medicare Supplement plans. They offer their plans through subsidiary companies - so an Aetna Medicare Supplement plan in one state may be offered under a different name in another state.

What are the names of the subsidiary companies?

  • Accendo Insurance Company (ACC)

  • Aetna Health and Life Insurance Company (AHLIC)

  • Aetna Health Insurance Company (AHIC)

  • American Continental Insurance Company (ACI)

  • Continental Life Insurance Company of Brentwood, Tennessee (CLI)

Aetna offers a variety of products, including non-medicare health insurance, dental insurance, group insurance, and life insurance. Because they have a variety of product lines, we like working with Aetna as we believe that their diversification helps them with stability.

What we like about Aetna Medicare Supplements:

  1. They offer a 12-month rate guarantee, so that you know that you will not have an increase in your premium for at least 12 months.

  2. They offer a nice household discount in many states (varies by state). This discount can often be applied even if your spouse is insured under a different Aetna subsidiary.

  3. They have a simple application process which can usually be completed 100% over the phone (as always, you can call us to get started - 1-855-887-5050).

  4. Apply Today, Pay Tomorrow...
Aetna does not require up-front payment on their Medicare Supplement policies if you are applying for a future start date. For instance, if you are turning 65 in August, and applying for a Medicare Supplement in May - you can select for your first payment to begin in August. Just let us know when you call us, and we'll make sure to set it up correctly for you.

  5. You can pick any convenient monthly payment date. While many companies give you limited options for your payment date (i.e., they may require payment on the 5th of every month, or a limited amount of choices like the 1st or 15th).

  6. Because they are one of the largest companies to offer Medicare Supplements, we know (from experience) that you will receive quality service and fast claim payments.

Any negatives?

This supplement company, like the others, is a really good choice. As an independent licensed agent, my goal is to help you find the best plan for you, and provide you with the information you need to make the best decision possible. Therefore, if we think of any negatives, regardless of how minor, we want to let you know about them.

  • The primary negative we want to highlight for Aetna is what seems to be a fairly quick subsidiary change over in some states. In some states, a few years ago Aetna was offering one subsidiary for a while, then they changed to another, then another. It is our opinion that this could possibly impact the future rates of those in the prior subsidiary in a given state.
It's impossible to predict the future rates. But, we can observe trends, and this is a small indicator that if they have the "low" rate today, they may not have the lowest rate tomorrow.

  • They have a $20 policy fee (some states), which means that you pay an extra $20 for your first premium. Even though it's only a one-time fee, we consider the policy fee to be a small negative.

  • They do not offer SilverSneakers.

All things considered, we believe that any negatives outlined above should only play a small part in your final decision on which company to use for your Medicare Supplement insurance. As always, we are happy to speak with you concerning your options and provide you with a personal analysis - call our office today at 1-855-887-5050.

Americo Financial Life & Annuity Insurance Company

Americo is one of our "smaller" companies which we offer to our clients.

Americo has been, primarily, a Life insurance company. They are fairly new (relatively speaking) to the Medicare Supplement industry.

Americo Financial Life and Annuity Insurance Company is based in Kansas City, MO, and they have over 100+ years of experience in the insurance industry.

What we like about Americo:

  1. They offer a generous household discount (in some states).

  2. They have a "general administrative rule" that they will not increase rates within your first 12 months with them.

  3. They do not have a policy fee - so there is no "extra fee" for your first month.

  4. They have an easy application process, allowing us to help you quickly get your policy approved.

  5. Apply Today, Pay Tomorrow...
Americo does not require up-front payment on their Medicare Supplement policies if you are applying for a future start date. Your first payment is drafted the day that your policy starts.

  6. You can pick any convenient monthly payment date. While many companies give you limited options for your payment date (i.e., they may require payment on the 5th of every month, or a limited amount of choices like the 1st or 15th).

  7. They've shown reasonable stability for a "new" company.

  8. Their rates are still some of the lowest rates out there.

Any negatives?

This supplement company, like the others, is a good choice. But if we had to pick any negatives, it would be the following:

  • Compared to the "big four" (UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, Anthem, and Mutual of Omaha), they are very small. This matters because of long-term rate stability.

  • They do not offer key "extra benefits" - like SilverSneakers.

All things considered, we believe that any negatives outlined above should only play a small part in your final decision on which company to use for your Medicare Supplement insurance. As always, we are happy to speak with you concerning your options and provide you with a personal analysis - call our office today at 1-855-887-5050.

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield (Community Insurance Company)

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is a very popular company. They are one of the four largest Medicare Supplement providers in the US - providing seniors with a stable company with a great history.

Anthem offers both Medicare Supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans - so it's important to know that when you purchase a Medicare Supplement plan, that you are not restricted by any networks like an HMO or a PPO.

What we like about Anthem:

  1. They offer a household discount (in select states).

  2. They do not have a policy fee - so there is no "extra fee" for your first month.

  3. They have an electronic application process, allowing us to help you quickly get your policy approved (Just call us to get started).

  4. Their rates are reasonable - they may not always be the lowest, but they are not outrageously high either.

  5. Buy Now... Pay Later...
Anthem does not require up-front payment on their Medicare Supplement policies if you are applying for a future start date. For instance, if you are turning 65 in December, and applying for a Medicare Supplement in October - your first payment will begin in December.

  6. They offer limited vision and hearing discounts.

  7. In many states, they include a SilverSneakers benefit along with the Medicare Supplement policy, at no extra fee. We've had hundreds of clients over the years use SilverSneakers. What is SilverSneakers? SilverSneakers is a program where select local gyms will allow you to use their facilities at no cost to you.

  8. Because they are one of the largest companies to offer Medicare Supplements, we know (from experience) that you will receive quality service and fast claim payments.

  9. In some states, they do not have a different price for tobacco users, making them one of the lower-cost options compared to the companies who charge higher rates for those who use tobacco.

Any negatives?

This supplement company, like the others, is a good choice. But if we had to pick any negatives, it would be the following:

  • Some of their plans are over-priced (in our opinion). They seem to have good pricing on some plans, but not as good on other plans. Be sure to have us do a full, custom rate comparison for you.

  • They do not offer a rate guarantee. While generally stable in their rates, other companies will often guarantee your rates up to 12 months.

  • Their monthly draft days are not flexible - everyone pays for their supplement plan around the 5th of the month (other companies are a little more flexible on payment dates).

  • They have an electronic application process but it is a little bit more difficult than some of the other companies who have easier (shorter) applications. Regardless, we'll work with you to make sure everything goes smoothly.

The negatives outlined above are quite minor, and our clients have always been pleased with Anthem's service. As always, we are happy to speak with you concerning your options and provide you with a personal analysis - call our office today at 1-855-887-5050.

Assured Life Association

Assured Life Association is one of our "smaller" companies which we offer to our clients.

What we like about Assured Life Association:

  1. They offer a generous household discount (in some states).

  2. Their rates are low in some states.

  3. They have a "general administrative rule" that they will not increase rates within your first 12 months with them.

  4. Assured Life Association is a Fraternal Benefit Society and it is a not-for-profit insurance company. What do they do with the profits? They give the profits back to the members through community benefits like scholarships (even for children or grandchildren), summer camp grants, charitable giving, and discounts.
There are many other benefits that the company is involved in, but we wanted to highlight one more. The best benefit, in our opinion, is their Assistance to Orphaned Children benefit. In a world where most insurance organizations use profits to enrich shareholders - they do things a little bit differently - helping children who have lost their parents. And we like that.

Any negatives?

This supplement company, like the others, is a good choice. But if we had to pick any negatives, it would be the following:

  • They are smaller than the "big four" which we highlighted above.

  • They have a one-time $25 policy fee, making your initial premium $25 extra.

  • They do not offer SilverSneakers.

  • All applications for Medicare Supplement insurance must be signed traditionally - pen and paper. While many insurance companies have moved towards electronic signatures as the standard, if you'd like to apply for Assured Life Assocation, we'll need to send you paperwork for you to physically sign.

All things considered, we believe that any negatives outlined above should only play a small part in your final decision on which company to use for your Medicare Supplement insurance. As always, we are happy to speak with you concerning your options and provide you with a personal analysis - call our office today at 1-855-887-5050.

Cigna MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTS

Cigna has become popular in the Medicare Supplement world.

When I first started working with Medicare Supplements (back in 2010), Cigna was not one of the "big players" in the Medicare Supplement world. Similar to what Aetna has done, Cigna has started to make a big push in the Medicare Supplement market - making them a competitive and strong company.

They offer their plans through subsidiary companies - so a Cigna Medicare Supplement plan in one state may be offered under a different name in another state.

What are the names of the subsidiary companies?

  • Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company (CHLIC)

  • Cigna National Health Insurance Company (CNHIC)

  • American Retirement Life Insurance Company (ARLIC)

  • Loyal American Life Insurance Company (LOYAL)

Cigna also offers a variety of products, including non-medicare health insurance for individuals and families, dental insurance, group insurance (through employers), and life insurance. Because they have a variety of product lines, we like working with Cigna as we believe that their diversification helps them with stability.

What we like about Cigna Medicare Supplements:

  1. They offer a 12-month rate guarantee, so that you know that you will not have an increase in your premium for at least 12 months.

  2. They offer a nice household discount in many states (varies by state).

  3. They have a simple application process which can usually be completed 100% over the phone (as always, you can call us to get started - 1-855-887-5050).

  4. You can pick any convenient monthly payment date. While many companies give you limited options for your payment date (i.e., they may require payment on the 5th of every month, or a limited amount of choices like the 1st or 15th).

  5. Limited vision discounts through their Cigna Healthy Rewards program.

Any negatives?

This supplement company, like the others, is a really good choice. As an independent licensed agent, my goal is to help you find the best plan for you, and provide you with the information you need to make the best decision possible. Therefore, if we think of any negatives, regardless of how minor, we want to let you know about them.

  • The primary negative we want to highlight for Cigna is the same negative that we highlighted for Aetna. Cigna has had, what seems to be a fairly quick subsidiary change over in some states. In some states, a few years ago Cigna was offering one subsidiary for a while, then they changed to another subsidiary, and we believe that this change over in subsidiaries can possibly negatively affect the rates of those who are in the "not current" subsidiary.
It's impossible to predict the future rates. But, we can observe trends, and this is a small indicator that if they have the "low" rate today, they may not have the lowest rate tomorrow.

  • They do not offer SilverSneakers. (In some states, Silver & Fit is available, which is similar to SilverSneakers - but it's only available under the following subsidiaries: ARLIC and LOYAL)

  • They are not one of the "big four," but they are gaining market share aggressively.

  • Sometimes there is a one-time policy fee (ARLIC and LOYAL, some states), and sometimes there is not (CHLIC).

All things considered, we believe that any negatives outlined above should only play a small part in your final decision on which company to use for your Medicare Supplement insurance. As always, we are happy to speak with you concerning your options and provide you with a personal analysis - call our office today at 1-855-887-5050.

csi life

CSI Life is a member of the Berkshire Hathaway family, one of the most admired and respected financial brands throughout the world. CSI Life is known for delivering one of the most stable rate structures in the industry over the past 5 years. Stable rates equate to happy policyholders.

What we like about CSI Life:

  1. They offer a generous household discount (in some states).

  2. Their rates are some of the lower rates in the industry.

  3. They have a very easy application process - we can complete everything for you in a short amount of time.

  4. Buy Now... Pay Later...
CSI Life does not require up-front payment on their Medicare Supplement policies if you are applying for a future start date. For instance, if you are turning 65 in December, and applying for a Medicare Supplement in October - your first payment will begin in December.

  5. CSI Life is a Berkshire Hathaway Company. Berkshire is located in Omaha, Nebraska, and is headed by Chairman Warren Buffett. Berkshire Hathaway is one of the world’s most admired companies.

Any negatives?

We believe that CSI Life is a great pick - and an excellent company to work with. If we had to pick any negatives, it would be the following:

  • They are smaller than the "big four" which we highlighted above. However, they are A+ rated and part of Berkshire Hathaway, which is a large organization.

  • They have a one-time policy fee of $25 in some states, so that your first premium costs $25 extra.

  • They do not offer SilverSneakers.

GPM Health And Life Insurance Company (Government Personnel Mutual)

GPM Health and Life Insurance Company is one of our "smaller" companies which we offer to our clients.

GPM Life, the parent company of GPM Health and Life Insurance Company, has an interesting history - it was started in 1934 as an insurance company which would provide life insurance to servicemen who died in war (acts of war were exclusions to life insurance, leaving military families unable to access much-needed funds in times of need).

GPM Health and Life Insurance Company is located in San Antonio, TX.

What we like about GPM Health and Life Insurance Company:

  1. They offer a generous household discount (in some states).

  2. They have a standard practice that they will not increase your rate for your first 12 months as a policyholder. This is their General Administrative Rule.

  3. Their rates are some of the lower rates in the industry.

  4. They have a very easy application process - we can complete everything for you in a short amount of time.

  5. They are administered by Mutual of Omaha - so customer support is outstanding.

Any negatives?

We believe that GPM Health & Life Insurance Company is a great pick - and an excellent company to work with. If we had to pick any negatives, it would be the following:

  • They are smaller than the "big four" which we highlighted above. However, they are administered by Mutual of Omaha, one of the big four.

  • They have a one-time policy fee of $25 in some states, so that your first premium costs $25 extra.

  • They do not offer SilverSneakers.

We believe that any negatives outlined above should only play a small part in your final decision on which company to use for your Medicare Supplement insurance. Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company (GTL)

Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company (GTL) is one of the smaller companies which we offer to our clients.

Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company sells both life insurance, Medicare Supplement insurance, and a vast variety of ancillary products. This diversification of products can help the stability of any company that does not have all of their "eggs in one basket."

Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company is located in Glenview, IL.

What we like about Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company:

  1. They offer an easy-to-get household discount. During the application process, you'll be asked if you live with anyone over the age of 18. If you do, then you'll be able to get the discount (most states). This is very good, because most companies want a spouse or domestic partner to also be enrolled in their Medicare Supplement plan before they'll grant a discount. With GTL - you just need to live with someone else over the age of 18.

  2. Their rates are some of the lower rates in the industry.

  3. They have a very easy application process - including a voice signature - so we can complete everything for you in a short amount of time.

  4. Apply Today, Pay Tomorrow.
Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company does not require up-front payment on their Medicare Supplement policies if you are applying for a future start date. For instance, if you are turning 65 in August, and applying for a Medicare Supplement in May - you will pay your first payment in August.

  5. They have a highly recommended home health product which can be purchased in addition to their Medicare Supplement product.

Any negatives?

We believe that Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company is a great pick - and an excellent company to work with. If we had to pick any negatives, it would be the following:

  • They are smaller than the "big four" which we highlighted above.

  • They do not offer SilverSneakers.

  • Their rating with AM Best is B+, which is slightly lower than some of the others we offer.

  • In most states, they have a one-time policy fee of $25, so your initial premium is $25 extra. While not a major drawback - we try to list all of the pros and cons which we can think of.

We believe that any negatives outlined above should only play a small part in your final decision on which company to use for your Medicare Supplement insurance. As always, we are happy to speak with you concerning your options and provide you with a personal analysis - call our office today at 1-855-887-5050.

Heartland National Life Insurance Company

Heartland National Life Insurance Company is one of our "smaller" companies which we offer to our clients.

Heartland National Life Insurance Company is fairly new (relatively speaking) to the Medicare Supplement industry.

Heartland National Life Insurance Company is based in Blue Springs, MO.

What we like about Heartland National Life Insurance Company:

  1. They offer a generous household discount (in some states).

  2. They have an easy application process, allowing us to help you quickly get your policy approved.

  3. You can pick any convenient monthly payment date. While many companies give you limited options for your payment date (i.e., they may require payment on the 5th of every month, or a limited amount of choices like the 1st or 15th) Heartland National allows you to pick which day of the month you want to pay. Note: If you pick a day after the 10th, it will draft in advance rather than in the month of coverage.

  4. They've shown reasonable stability for a "new" company.

  • They have a policy fee - so the first month will cost you extra.

Humana Insurance Company

Humana is an incredibly popular insurance company. They are one of the largest health insurance companies in the country!

In addition to offering Medicare Supplement insurance, Humana also offers Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Part D plans (prescription insurance), Dental and Vision insurance, and Group Insurance.

Because Humana offers both Medicare Supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans, it's important to know that when you purchase a Medicare Supplement plan, that you are not restricted by any networks like an HMO or a PPO plan offered by Humana. They are completely different. Because Medicare will be your primary insurance, as long as the provider takes Medicare, the supplement plan will pay their portion.

What we like about Humana Insurance Company:

  1. They offer a household discount (in select states).

  2. They do not have a policy fee - so there is no "extra fee" for your first month.

  3. They have an electronic application process, allowing us to help you quickly get your policy approved (Just call us at 1-855-887-5050 to get started).

  4. Their rates are reasonable - they may not always be the lowest, but they are not outrageously high either.

  5. They are one of the few carriers that will allow Credit Card premium payments. Can you pay for your Medicare Supplement plan with a credit card? With Humana - the answer is YES.

Any negatives?

  • Their monthly draft days are not flexible - everyone pays for their supplement plan around the 5th of the month (other companies are a little more flexible on payment dates).

  • Occasionally, a doctor's office will get confused and state to people that they "don't take Humana" - but they are normally referring to Humana's popular Medicare Advantage program. When this happens, it's just a matter of re-educating the provider that Original Medicare is the primary insurance, and Humana is simply the Supplemental (secondary) insurance.

As with many of the other companies listed here - these few minor negatives should not be the only factors for your decision. Humana is a great company, with good customer service, and many of our clients have been happy with their Medicare Supplement plans. As always, we recommend that you contact us for a fully customized and personalized comparison report - you can either request it on our website here or call us at 1-855-887-5050.

Lumico Life Insurance Company

Lumico has more than 50 years experience handling life insurance. But in 2018, they started a Medicare Supplement division, and we are excited about being able to offer them. Their parent company is Swiss Re, which is a global organization in the financial services realm.

What we like about Lumico:

  1. They have some of the lowest rates in the country right now. If you are looking for a small, low priced company, then Lumico may be right for you.

  2. Their application process is very easy. Just call us to get started (1-855-887-5050).

  3. They offer household discounts (some states).

  4. They are financially secure (part of Swiss Re), which is good to know when dealing with a smaller company.

  5. Apply Today, Pay Tomorrow.
Lumico Life Insurance Company does not require up-front payment on their Medicare Supplement policies if you are applying for a future start date. For instance, if you are turning 65 in August, and applying for a Medicare Supplement in May - you will pay your first payment in August.

  6. You can pick any convenient monthly payment date. While many companies give you limited options for your payment date (i.e., they may require payment on the 5th of every month, or a limited amount of choices like the 1st or 15th).

Any negatives?

  • Because they are new to the Medicare Supplement market having started in 2018, we do not yet have any experience with them to share, other than that so far, we like working with them. But this in and of itself can be considered a negative - that we don't yet have a track record to look at.

  • They do not offer SilverSneakers.

  • In most states, they have a one-time policy fee of $25, so your initial premium is $25 extra. While not a major drawback - we try to list all of the pros and cons which we can think of.

Any time a new company comes to the Medicare Supplement market, we proceed with a little caution as we can not see a track record of rates. We believe that Lumico will be a good long-term option - and if you are interested in one of the lowest priced companies, then they may be a good fit for you.

Manhattan Life Insurance Company is one of our favorite smaller companies. What we like about Manhattan Life Insurance Company:

  1. They offer a generous household discount (in some states).

  2. They have an easy application process which we can complete 100% over the phone, allowing us to help you quickly get your policy approved.

  3. They've shown stability over the years - earning them a good reputation among agents who want their clients to have stable rates.

  4. Their rates are very reasonable - connect with us for an individual quote.

Any negatives?

  • They are not one of the "big four" - so they are a smaller company, which isn't a bad thing considering that they still exceed in customer service.

  • They do not offer SilverSneakers.

  • They have a one-time $25 policy fee, making your initial premium $25 extra.

  • Their rating with AM Best is B+, which is slightly lower than some of the others we offer.

Medical Mutual of Ohio

Medical Mutual of Ohio is a great little insurance company in the Buckeye State. Medical Mutual of Ohio has been overing health insurance since 1934, and offers covers coverage for several different kinds of insurance - including individual and family coverage, group coverage, and medicare coverage.

Medical Mutual of Ohio offers both Medicare Supplement insurance and Medicare Advantage insurance, so it's important to note that if you purchase a Medicare Supplement plan with Medical Mutual of Ohio - that you are purchasing a plan without network limitations (like the Advantage Plans).

What we like about Medical Mutual of Ohio:

  1. They are an Ohio company and a great choice for Ohio seniors.

  2. They have one of the easiest online applications allowing for fast enrollment - contact us for details and to get started.

  3. Their rates are good - especially for men interested in Plan G.

  4. They include a SilverSneakers benefit along with the Medicare Supplement policy, at no extra fee. We've had hundreds of clients over the years use SilverSneakers. What is SilverSneakers? SilverSneakers is a program where select local gyms will allow you to use their facilities at no cost to you.

  5. They do not have a policy fee - so there is no "extra fee" for your first month.

Any negatives?

  • They do not offer a household discount - so your rates will not go down if your spouse enrolls. We list this as a negative because the majority of Medicare Supplement companies offer a discount, but Medical Mutual of Ohio does not.

  • They are not one of the "big four" - so they are a smaller company. But part of the reason they are small is because they are Ohio-only. So, if you are in Ohio, they are one of the "big" options.

  • Their rates are unisex - meaning that they charge men and women the same premium. This is good for men, but not so good for women, as women typically will pay a lower premium with most companies who offer separate rates for men and women.

As one of Ohio's largest insurers, we like Medical Mutual of Ohio, and despite some drawbacks, we feel very comfortable recommending them. Connect with us and we'll help you get a specific quote for you. You can request quotes by calling us at 1-855-887-5050 or by using the "Free Quotes & Comparisons" link above.

They are one of the fastest companies to answer the phone when you call in and need to talk with someone, and they excel in all areas. 7. They offer limited Vision discounts at no extra charge.

Any negatives?

  • The only negative we can think of is that they do not offer SilverSneakers with their Medicare Supplement program. For those who are not interested in a gym membership - then this is certainly a non-factor.
